Kitchen remodels are one of the most popular home improvement projects around. It’s not just about making a room look better, it’s about making it work better under demanding conditions. The entire room needs to handle heat, moisture, messes, and all the activity that goes into creating a home-cooked meal.
Kitchen cabinets are usually near the top of the list of features to update, and at Zenith Painting & Coatings we’ve got a lot of experience with painting them. Here are some handy tips for giving your cabinets the look you want with the durability you need.
1. Remove Hinges from Doors
Removing the doors before painting is common sense, but removing hinges from the doors might not be as obvious. It’s worth the extra effort, though. You’ll be sure to avoid messily painting over the metalwork or getting the perfect coverage with masking tape.
2. Lay Doors Flat to Paint
To ensure smooth, even, drip-free painting, lay the door flat before you start—not on the floor, but on top of a supporting object. Once you’ve finished the top side and it has dried completely, just flip it over and finish the job.
Odds are you’d like to paint several doors at once, so make sure you have a clean, safe place to keep all the doors as they dry. Clearing out the garage and laying down a tarp or some newspaper is a good idea. A towel placed between the supporting object and the door will protect against scratches.
3. Start with Primer, Finish with a Clear Coat
We just can’t emphasize enough how important it is to use primer if you want your paint to look great and last long. Cabinets will see a lot of use and need all the help they can get if you don’t want to be looking at peeling paint.
It’s exactly because of that expected wear and tear that you’ll want to finish up with a clear coat. Polyurethane is the standard option, and will add years to the life of your cabinets.
We hope that helps! Cabinet painting is a time-consuming and tricky task, and requires more effort and attention to detail than painting a wall.
