Staircase Painting in Simple Steps

Staircase painting tips from Zenith Painting and Coatings

Is cold winter weather keeping you indoors? There’s still plenty you can do around the house to stay busy.

Painting staircases can be a simple job that doesn’t require as much preparation or ventilation as wall painting projects, and that’s a good thing if you want to keep the cold Denver winters from blowing in. Here are a few painting tips to simplify the process.

1. Scrape and Sand

Painting over paint is a sure path to a sloppy job. Scrape off old paint and sand away any imperfections. If there are serious flaws in the surface, a little putty should do the trick. Apply it, let it set, and sand away any resulting bumps.

2. Wipe it Clean

Clear any dust and remove all debris. An all-purpose cleaner combine with warm water should be all you need to ensure a clean start to your project—but take care of the sanding first, or you’ll have to repeat the job!

3. Start at the Top and Move Down

You don’t want to be trapped upstairs. Not only is there no escape to the outside, but it’s not easy to correct mistakes from above, and mistakes happen.

In fact, before you start at the top, begin with the sides. Begin by varnishing or painting the handrails. You’ll have a safe surface to grip during the stair painting and any drips or drops can be painted over.

Hopefully that wasn’t too hard, but larger or more vertical projects can be. Next time, why not have the job done by professional painters and leave the hassle to us?
