Do you feel like your walls are dull and dreary? With the commencement of fall and winter on the horizon, now is the time to brighten your home and fill it with warmth! Freshly painted walls can breathe new life into your home and make the long winter hours spent indoors much more enjoyable.

There are two main things to consider before choosing your perfect paint:

  1. Sheen
  2. Color
Choosing a Paint Sheen

When choosing a sheen it is important to think of each room and its specific needs. In general, its best to stick to one sheen per room but mixing a number of different sheens throughout your home can add character and panache.

GlossAs a rule of thumb, the more gloss present in the paint, the easier it will be to clean. If you have small children, the glossier the better! Opting for a high gloss sheen will allow you to easily wipe the wall down with a damp sponge to remove stains and messy handprints.

Semi-gloss– This is a good choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim. It remains easily washable but isn’t quite as reflective as the gloss paints.

MatteIf you have walls with imperfections, matte paint is your new best friend! Matte paints will hide divots and cracks but will show more dirt and be harder to clean.

Picking a Paint Color

Picking a color palette for your home can be fun, exciting, and overwhelming. Here are the top three things to consider before picking your home’s perfect color pallet.

Decide how you want each room to feel– It is important to envision the look you are going for beforehand. Are you looking to create a relaxing and calm vibe? Try using cool greens and blues. Or, if you are looking for a more energetic and vibrant space, use yellow or oranges. Colors can have a huge effect on your mood so it is essential to take this into consideration before deciding on a color palette.

Use a consistent neutral color throughout your home– Whether you choose white, cream, or grey,  using the same set of neutrals throughout your home will create a commonality from room to room.

Follow the color wheel/ match swatches– When in doubt check a color wheel! Color wheels will help show you which colors match and which colors clash when paired together.
