Many of the homeowners we talk to have questions about how we are going to apply the paint. The two methods of painting a home are with a paint brush and a roller, or with a sprayer and a back roller. Zenith Painting employs both methods in our work, and we find that given the circumstances, it is often best to use one over the other.

Using a paint brush and a roller is the “traditional” way to paint a home. This type of paint application is best used on areas that require a lot of detail like trim. If you are using any type of stain, it is always applied best with a brush and roller. The paint will go on thicker with this application than if you were to spray (with no back roll).

Applying paint with spray and back roll (going behind the spray to work the paint into the substrate) is a very efficient method of painting a house. This method uses a little bit more paint than brush and roll, but the application of the paint should be no different than a good brush and roll job. One of the biggest myths in the painting industry is that spraying paint is bad. If your contractor is only spraying with no back roll, it will be a thin coat of paint that will not hold up well.  However, a good spray of paint with a consistent back roll behind the spray will deliver the same quality results as a good brush and roll.

When you hire a painting contractor for your exterior painting, make sure you discuss both options prior to the start of the project. As with many things in the contracting industry, either method of painting is only as good as the contractor who applies it. Be sure that you are comfortable with the professional painter that you hire.
