In general, glossier finishes are more resistant against scuffs and stains. They also draw the eye with their reflective, shiny properties – but that can also be a drawback, as glossy paints will highlight any flaws in the surface they coat, like cracks or dents.
Here are the common finish options, from least to most glossy:
Flat: Flat paint has no shine and will do the best job of concealing flaws in surfaces. However, it is also prone to developing certain flaws of its own: It is not as durable or washable as glossier paints and should be used in areas expected to receive less traffic. Great for adding a subtle finish to ceilings, not so great for bathrooms and kitchens where humidity can cause damage.
Matte: Similar to flat, and virtually identical with some manufacturers, but typically matte paints will have slightly more shine than flats. As a result, they are also a bit more washable.
Eggshell: This finish may also differ slightly depending on the manufacturer, but you can expect it to have a low level of shine and reflectivity and increased durability.
Satin: With satin, you will begin to clearly notice light being reflected and creating a soft glow on walls, creating a lustrous effect distinct from eggshell finishes. It is subtle, smooth and somewhat moisture resistant allowing for light cleaning, making it a good choice for halls, stairways, and other areas prone to traffic.
Semi-Gloss: At this level of shine, the paint is durable and moisture-resistant enough to be used in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. It can be scrubbed regularly without causing damage and is ideal for brightening up doors and window frames, but will also highlight cracks and other undesirable details.
Gloss: The shiniest and most durable finish available, and the most reflective. It will overwhelm the eye given the chance, and is best suited for trim and other detail work like cabinets and furniture. The visual effect is comparable to enamel or plastic.
Keep in mind that particularly with glossier finishes, careful surface preparation and expert application is essential to prevent flaws that will be clearly highlighted by the paint’s reflective qualities.
