A new coat of paint is only the start of a larger project: Making your home look better than it ever has before. Here are some tips from famous interior designers for choosing and coordinating your paint colors and room accessories.

“While looking at one of my first New York apartments, David Hicks told me diplomatically, ‘Dear boy, if you’re going to paint the walls white, you need art.’”  -Peter Dunham

We couldn’t agree more, Peter. Once the painting contractors have finished the work, the fun has just started.

“A good paint formula for ceilings is the trim color plus 50% white.” –Allison Caccoma

That’s a handy tip for hassle-free color coordination.

“Every room needs a touch of black, just as it needs at least one antique piece.” –Jan Showers

Is Jan right? That’s up to you to decide, but we think following her advice will produce a lovely effect.

“The perfect wall color is seldom the prettiest shade on the fan deck. Give that slightly drab stepsister shade a go—it will be far more interesting.” –Robin Bell

Good advice, Robin. But what if I already went a bolder and brighter paint color and want to tone it down?

“When painting your walls, go bolder and stronger than you’re comfortable with. After it’s finished, if it’s too intense, gray the color with its complement and wash it on—you get an expensive decorator look in hours, and it is so easy! Pour the paint in a paint tray, then with a wet rag slosh and rub the new color over the old savagely. The color will then be a quieter version of itself, and you should immediately love the effect. This has worked for me 99 times out of 100.” –Jim Howard

Thanks, Jim—although if any of our customers are thinking of trying this, we’d recommend testing this method on a small scale before tackling the entire room.

At Zenith Painting, we may not have the way with words some of these designers do, but we know all there is to know about starting your interior design off right, with a beautiful fresh coat of paint.
