Paint Around Ceiling Fixtures
Transform your interior space by painting an often unnoticed, but essential wall, the ceiling. Depending how well you paint the ceiling and around your ceiling fixtures, will determine the desired effect for the entire room. Choosing a soft tone for your ceiling will make your rooms look grander and more inviting. However, paint blots and drips on your fixtures will become undesirable but you can take a few simple steps to ensure a pristine ceiling paint job.
First and foremost, spread a drop cloth to protect your floor or furniture, and open the windows to avoid harsh paint fumes. Wipe down your ceiling fixtures and the ceiling itself for dust. Any residue or grime left behind can affect the paint’s color and texture. If it’s an option, remove exposed light bulbs, blades from ceiling fans, lamp shades or parts from your fixture than can be detached.
Cover any hanging fixtures with a trash bag by pulling the bag up and over, and secure it with a strip of painter’s tape. This will prevent paint from dripping onto the suspended fixture. Place the painter’s tape securely around the edge of the fixture’s base where it meets the ceiling and you are ready to paint. It is recommended to use a roller for the first layer and an angled brush to handle fine lines or small areas.
Dip your brush with high quality flat paint – remember too much paint can result in splatters or drips – and apply a layer around the base of the fixture. Brush the outside edges of the paint towards the center of your ceiling. It’s a technique to eliminate circular ridges of paint, your brush stroke may left behind. The best scenario is to finish the entire ceiling in one session because allowing the paint to dry at different times will produce visible lap marks. Finish the rest of the ceiling and when the job is complete, remove the plastic bag from your hanging fixture along with the painter’s tape on its base.
