Top Home Decorating Tips from Professional Designers

Zenith Painting is just one part of Zenith Painting & Coatings, and together the Zenith family is on a mission to make every home in Denver look great. But the truth is, once we’ve ‘finished’ your home, the fun is just starting.

That’s why we’ve been sharing some of the top tips from renowned professional interior decorators. Now, you might disagree with some of these decorating declarations, but they should be good food for thought as you work on perfecting the look of your home.

So, without further ado, more tips from interior design legends:

“I never paint a ceiling dead white because all white paint has a bit of gray in it, and it takes the room down. Paint the ceiling a cream shade.” –Athalie Derse

There’s truth in this. A truly pure white surface is difficult to achieve and quick to show signs of age. You can create a warmer and more durable effect with some shading.

Want to get really ambitious? Here’s a project we’d love to take on:

“People don’t take into account how they’ll look in a room when choosing a color. I just did an apartment where the woman has blue eyes with a bit of a purple tint to them, so everything is lavender to purple. She simply glows. And I recently did an orange foyer. I chose a particular shade of orange because my client has brown hair, and brunettes look great in orange. Then I took that exact same orange—not just any orange, that exact shade—and ran it through the house.” –Stan Topol

Can you imagine an entire house themed to complement you? If that sounds like a bit much, another designer offers a dissenting opinion:

“In the old days, women would match their shoes to their handbag and their pillows to the bedspread. Unless you’re doing a room that’s completely covered in the same pattern, don’t coordinate! It looks much more chic to have a variety of pillows made from different fabrics.” –Madeline Stuart

Perhaps not as impressive as matching your home to your eyes, but more fun. And whether you want to coordinate or clash, here’s a neat, inexpensive way to do it:

“If a great art collection isn’t in your budget, hang a framed cutting of a beautiful fabric or wallpaper.” –Alexandra Angle

Cheaper than a Picasso with the bonus of being customized to achieve just the look you want. We like it.
