Winter in Denver is the time for bundling up and keeping warm, but the cold months are also a fine time for an interior painting project. With heating on and windows closed, homeowners may ask if it’s safe or smart to paint interiors during winter. The answer: Yes—most of the time.
Is It Safe?
Using oil-based paints can cause distinct odors. In moderation the scent is perfectly safe and will disappear in several days. By combining your home’s heating system with circulating fans, the smell will fade even faster.
There are some people sensitive to paint odors, or concerned about exposure when pregnant. If this is the case, there are low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and no-VOC paints which are nearly odorless and do not contain harmful compounds.
The fumes of some products may be flammable and should not be used around space heaters, water heaters, ovens, or similar appliances. Check labels on paint before buying to establish whether this is a risk factor. Most varieties of interior paint will be entirely safe.
Is It Smart?
Denver winters are harsh and it makes sense to avoid painting exteriors, but does the weather affect interior painting projects? Not in most cases.
If your home is heated and has any insulation whatsoever, there should be no problems. Winter weather typically has low humidity and your heating system will add to that effect, so paint’s ability to dry and set will not be affected. Interior sides of exterior walls may dry at a slower rate if they are cold, but this shouldn’t be a problem. The drying process can be accelerated with space heaters, fans, and/or dehumidifiers.
