How to Paint Stucco Ceilings

Who doesn’t love popcorn? If you’re planning to paint over a textured ceiling, the answer may be you. When the popcorn on your ceiling is looking old, it needs a touch-up. That yellow isn’t butter! But this project can be difficult.

Popcorn ceilings are typically covered with alkyd paint, a combination of “alkyd” resin and mineral spirits, so they can be repainted using water-based paint. If your ceilings were treated in this fashion, you’re free to apply whatever water-based paint you choose. If you are unsure, it’s best to prepare with a spatter-free alkyd paint made for plaster and stucco ceilings.

When choosing the sheen, a matte finish will hide surface imperfections and reduce glare. We recommend a soft eggshell to keep your ceilings from looking chalky. With paint chosen, the actual painting process is fairly straightforward.

Follow these rules as you paint:

Cover your hair.

Wear protective glasses.

Choose a roller with a large nap that can pull paint through the handle. This way you can avoid having to constantly bend down to apply paint to the roller and you’ll have better control over the amount on the roller which means fewer splatters.

Take regular breaks to stretch your neck and back.

This can be a lengthy project. Work a single room as time permits. Don’t plan to paint multiple ceilings in one weekend.
