Choosing a Paint Type: Latex or Oil?

If you’re planning a painting project in Thornton or Aurora, it’s important to evaluate all types of paints and determine which suits each room of your residential interior. All paints are not made equal.

Just as decorating decisions vary from room to room, so does the appropriate type of paint. You will want to use a different finish for your kitchen than for your bedroom. Zenith Painting & Coatings has years of experience in commercial painting and residential painting in the Louisville, Arvada, and Highlands Ranch areas. We make it our job to know which type of paint is best for any application. Here’s a quick review on the best uses of latex and oil based paints.

Oil Paint:

Oil based paints have a stronger odor and are typically more expensive than latex paints, but they are also more durable. Choosing a quality oil-based for your doors, baseboards and trim will add more durability than a latex paint. Oil and solvent based paint products are more difficult to clean than water-based materials.

Latex Paint:

Latex paints are water-based and have many positive qualities. They are fast-drying and low-odor paints that are exceptionally easy to clean. A latex paint with a flat finish is standard for many interior residential spaces. If you have children, a painting contractor would recommend moving in the direction of semi-gloss (rather than flat) latex paint, will resist crayons and other indignities inflicted by little hands. At House Painting of Colorado, we’ll help to evaluate the lighting, the wall’s smoothness, and your budget to select a paint that matches. Oil-based paints will hold up better against high traffic, but latex paints resist yellowing and have more resistance to mildew. These paints are particularly appropriate for moisture-prone rooms like kitchens and bathrooms.

Self-Priming Paint:

As we’ve discussed previously, we don’t recommend using self-priming paint except for very specific applications like painting drywall.

Whatever the project, the right paint and finish will result in the best end product. Contact Zenith Painting today at 800-381-4601 with any questions or to schedule an initial consultation and free quote.
